The charge you pay depends on the treatment you need to keep your mouth, gums and teeth healthy. You will only ever be asked to pay one charge for each complete course of treatment, even if you need to visit your dentist more than once to finish it – either Band 1, Band 2 or Band 3. If you have to be referred to another dentist for another course of treatment you can expect a second charge. Some minor treatments, including having stitches removed or repair to dentures (if they can be mended), are free.
If you are not exempt from charges, you should pay one of the following charges for each course of treatment you receive:
This covers an examination, diagnosis (e.g. X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems, a scale and polish if needed and application of fluoride varnish or fissure sealants.
This covers everything listed in Band 1 above, plus any further treatment such as fillings, root canal work or if your dentist needs to take out one or more of your teeth.
This covers everything listed in Bands 1 and 2 above, plus crowns, dentures or bridges.
A course of treatment is the treatment identified by your dentist at a check-up which you need to restore your mouth to a healthy condition.
This may take more than one appointment, and you may be referred to specialists for elements of the treatment.
Referrals are usually free, but referrals to the IMOS* service for extractions, apicectomies and examination of soft tissue or other problems in the mouth are charged under band 2.
Referrals to private specialists are free, but your examination and treatment by a private specialist is not.
Information about conditions on NHS Courses of Treatment are available here.
*The IMOS service only operates within Kent, and is only available to patients whose GP (Doctor) is in Kent. Its aim is to reduce waiting times for treatment. If your GP is not within Kent, we will try to identify an alternative service for your referral. Please be aware that if your GP is within Kent, it may not be possible to refer you for NHS treatment covered by IMOS through any other channel.
