A dental implant is a titanium post that acts as a replacement root of a missing tooth. An implant is able to support a single or several artificial teeth.
Dental implants provide the most natural solution to lost teeth, both in comfort and in appearance. The visible part of the tooth is sculpted to match the shape and colour of your exising teeth and is fixed permanently in your mouth.
The natural teeth near where the implant will be placed must be in good health.
Implants can be used to support dentures, keeping them securely in place without adhesives with no shifting or slipping. You can bite, chew, and talk naturally with improved comfort and confidence.
You may have the option to replace your dentures with permanent teeth
We examine all our patients thoroughly. In patients where there is not enough bone, more bone may need to be added with a bone grafting procedure, since an implant needs sufficient amounts of bone in all three dimensions to have adequate mechanical support. Sometimes a bone graft procedure may be advisable for aesthetic reasons. Different materials may be used for bone replacement. These substances include the patient’s own bone, for instance harvested from the jawbone or chin, bovine bone or artificially produced bone-like substances. Our maxillofacial and implant surgeons routinely increase the amount of bone using onlay grafts on existing bone, and sinus lift procedures. A sinus lift procedure increases the volume of bone towards the sinus in the upper jaw. The graft site is usually allowed to heal for several months.
Careful and detailed planning is required for the most predictable outcome. The exact amount of bone present is assessed on radiographs. 2-dimensional radiographs are usually taken prior to surgery. Sometimes a 3-dimensional or cone beam CT (computed tomography) scan will also be obtained.
The amount of time required for an implant treatment session will vary depending on the number of implants needed, the quantity and quality of the bone and the complexity of the individual situation. In carefully selected patients the implants can be inserted and a provisional prosthetic tooth (crown) can be placed in a single treatment session.
Often an implant can be placed immediately after extraction. Sometimes it is advisable to allow the remaining bone to heal prior to the placement of an implant.
Implants carry a success rate of around 95%. Important contributing factors are the patient’s general health and the patient’s oral hygiene. The risk of failure is increased in smokers.
